Water Heater Maintenance Guide

Whether you’ve been working in the yard all day preparing for summer or shoveling snow on the coldest winter day, when you come in from working hard you want to be able to take a nice hot shower or bath. But if you have a problem with your water heater, then that relaxing shower might need to wait. Fortunately, with our water heater maintenance guide, you can prevent issues that could get in the way of your comfort.

Five Steps for Maintaining Your Hot Water Heater

Keep your appliance in good working order by following these five steps:

  • Clear space around the appliance. If your water heater is located in a room you typically use for storage, make sure it’s free of clutter. It can easily happen that you don’t notice clutter building up and getting too close to the appliance. However, you should maintain at least two feet of clearance around it in order for it to operate safely.
  • Shut off the water supply and the power. In order to perform maintenance, you need to be safe. Turn off the power supply—the switch will be located close to the water heater—and shut off the water supply valve.
  • Test the TPR valve. The TPR valve is the temperature-pressure relief valve. This valve opens to release vapor if the pressure inside the tank gets too high, so it needs to be working properly. Place a bucket below the pipe under the TPR and open the valve quickly two to three times. If the valve leaks, it will need to be replaced.
  • Check the anode rod. The anode rod is housed inside the water tank. Its function is to attract minerals and other elements that could corrode the tank. Over time, the anode rod  will either corrode or get coated with calcium, at which point you’ll need to replace it. To check it, lift the anode rod out of the tank and visually inspect it. If it’s coated in sediment or if it’s less than half an inch in diameter, you should purchase a new one.
  • Flush the tank. You need to flush the tank to prevent sediment from building up inside of it. To do this, attach a hose to the drain valve and let all of the water drain out of the tank into a bucket. This will remove most of the sediment. If the water is cloudy, briefly open the cold water supply valve to let more water into the tank. Stir the sediment, then drain the tank again. Repeat this process until the water coming out of the tank is clear.

Call Water Heaters Now Today

Keeping up with routine maintenance will ensure your water heater can reliably serve your family for years. If your water heater is showing any other signs of wear and tear, however, it might be time for a replacement. Maintenance allows for safer, longer use of your water heater but like all appliances it eventually breaks down. When that happens, you can rely on Water Heaters Now to get you back in hot water the same day!

Signs You Need A New Water Heater Installation

Is it time for a new water heater installation in your home? It might be hard to decide when your current hot water heater has reached the end of its lifespan until it stops working completely. But there are ways to tell that you need a water heater replacement before it reaches that point. If you can spot the signs of an aging or failing water heater, you can avoid losing access to your hot water in the most critical times.

How To Know When It’s Time For A New Water Heater Installation

  1. Age of your water heater. Do you know the age of your water heater? If it’s over 12 years old, there’s a good chance it’s beginning to wear down and will need to be replaced soon. If you know your water heater is reaching this point, don’t let it fail on you. Get a replacement before it breaks down.
  2. Not enough hot water. If you’re constantly running out of hot water, it’s probably time for a new water heater installation. This could be a sign that the size water heater you have isn’t sufficient for your family anymore, or that the heating elements are not longer functioning correctly. Our professional team can help you choose the right size tank for your home or give advice on newer technology such as tankless water heaters.
  3. Leaks. This one speaks for itself! If your water heater has begun to leak into your home, call a professional right away. Avoid water damage by shutting off the water supply to the unit until a technician can arrive. Sometimes leaks can be repaired, but often times they’re a result of age and corrosion in the tank. A new water heater will serve your family for years to come, especially when properly maintained.
  4. Rusty water coming from your taps. When you turn on the hot water, does it come out reddish brown? Does it have little brown flecks in it? This is a sign that there is rust in your hot water tank. A rusted tank can quickly turn into a leaking tank if it’s not replaced.

Benefits of Upgrading to a Tankless Water Heater

If you’re like most homeowners, you don’t really think about your water heater too often. It’s an appliance that for many of us is out of sight, out of mind. However, when your family doesn’t have access to the hot water they need because of an old unit, it’s time to call a professional for a replacement. If you’re in the market for a new water heater, we suggest an upgrade to a tankless water heater in the Twin City metro area.

Why Should I Upgrade To A Tankless Water Heater?

There are many reasons why switching from your conventional storage tank system to a tankless heater will benefit your family. Read below to learn the benefits of upgrading to this modern water heater!

1) They Provide On-Demand Hot Water

The other name for tankless water heaters is an “on-demand” water heater. This is because it supplies continuous hot water whenever you turn on a tap. How are they able to do that?

Unlike a traditional tank-style water heater, there’s no storage tank to refill when the hot water runs out. As you turn on the tap, water runs over a heating element in the tankless heater which heats it on the spot. This means no waiting in between showers or chores for the hot water to come back. When you upgrade to a tankless heater, hot water can last through many showers, the dishwasher, and the washing machine!

2) They Have A Longer Lifespan

Many tankless water heaters have longer average lifespans than their storage tank counterparts. While a tank water heater may last 8-12 years with the proper maintenance, when you upgrade to a tankless water heater they can last up to 20 years according to the U.S. Department of Energy. While your initial investment may be a bit more than a traditional model, the years of continuous and reliable service will be well worth it.

3) They’re More Efficient

Because they avoid the heat loss associated with conventional water heaters, tankless models are more efficient to operate. For a home that uses around 40 gallons of hot water per day, they can be 34% more energy efficient. If you have a large family with more water water needs, they can still be 15% more energy efficient than a tank water heater. If you’re an energy conscious home, then a tankless water heater is the right move.

Call Water Heaters Now For A Tankless Water Heater Today

Before you make any purchasing decisions, call our professionals and make sure that an upgrade to a tankless model is right for you. Installing and repairing water heaters is all we do, so our team can give you the trusted guidance you need. At Water Heaters Now, we work with the best brands in the industry and ensure our customers get the best products on the market. Call today and get a free quote on your new tankless water heater!

Save By Switching to Tankless

Start Your New Year With Savings from a Tankless Water Heater Installation

If you are looking to save on your bills in the coming year, investing in a tankless water heater may be just the solution. Tankless water heaters, also commonly called on-demand water heaters, are the new standard in water heaters. There are many benefits to switching to this model of water heater that can save you money.

Benefits of a Tankless Water Heater

  • Efficiency: A tankless water heater can be 30% more efficient than a traditional tank water heater. With this increased efficiency comes savings for you. Energy Star estimates that the average family can save $100 per year by using a tankless water heater.
  • No Heat Loss: When a tank water heater runs, it needs to keep 40-50 gallons hot at all times. This means your tank is burning fuel constantly to keep the water at temperature. Tank models also lose heat as water sits in the tank and travels through pipes. Tankless water heaters lose no heat because they do not store water. You only use the water you need at any given time with on-demand heating.
  • No Leaks: If you’ve had a water heater leak in your basement, you can recall the frustration and cost associated with repairs. Because tankless heaters do not store water, you will never have to worry about leaks causing damage to your home.
  • Longer Lifespan: A traditional water heater has a lifespan of 10-12 years. A tankless heater can last up to 20 years with proper maintenance! This longevity will save you money since you can rely on this model for many years past the traditional water heater.

We’re ready to help you today. Check out our guarantee! Call Water Heaters Now to schedule your service.

Stay Warm with These Holiday Water Heater Tests!

The holidays are almost here and it’s a great time to have friends and family over. However, the fun can quickly stop when you aren’t getting hot water. During the winter months, one of the last things you want is for your water heater to stop working. To keep the hot water flowing over the holiday season, you’ll want to give your water heater some tests.

Here are some basic tips to follow this holiday season to keep your water heater in good condition:

Stick to 120°F

If you’ve never adjusted your water heater’s temperature before, it’s likely at the factory setting of 140°F. However, you can save energy and avoid accidental scalding by dropping the temperature 20 degrees. At 120°F, the water heater will use less energy, it’ll have a lighter workload, and hot water will be less likely to scald you. There are times you should stick with 140°F, but it’s generally best to err on the side of energy savings.

Test the TPR valve

Water heater tanks have a valve on the side or top called the Temperature Release Valve. This valve acts as a fail-safe that detects if there’s a dangerous level of pressure in the tank and will vent water to reduce the pressure if needed. As you can guess, the tank can fail catastrophically if the valve isn’t working properly. To test it, just lift the tab on the valve to let a little bit of water out. You want to see water come out only when the valve is open. If it leaks, drain the tank and get a replacement valve.

Install insulation

During the winter, the cold weather can adversely affect your water heater. Not only can it make it harder to heat water, but it can also cause pipes to freeze and crack. The best way to prevent these problems is by adding insulation to your pipes and the water heater. Pipe insulation can prevent condensation from forming on your pipes while water heater insulation can make it more efficient. Keep in mind that some models, particularly newer ones, come pre-insulated.

Drain the tank

Sediment is one of the major problems for any water heater that uses a tank. To keep it from causing major damage, you should flush out the tank once or twice a year. You can learn how to drain and flush your tank in our blog post on some basic water heater maintenance tips.

Why call Water Heaters Now to handle my problems?

Master Plumber Raymond Snesrud has been plumbing in the twin cities for 10 years and he says, “I have noticed that there are hundreds of plumbing companies who do thousands of plumbing types of repairs. I have had dozens of employees over the last 10 years, and I have found it very difficult to hire technicians who will respect people and their homes the way they deserve. One day five years ago, it occurred to me that if we only install and repair water heaters, we could become the leading experts at doing one thing.” Call Water Heaters Now today to learn more about how to keep your water heater working its best this winter!

4 Reasons Your Water Heater Is Colder in the Winter

Winter is almost here, and that means colder temperatures and plenty of snow. However, the winter also represents challenges for your water heater. Your water heater works every day of the year, but sometimes it winds up underperforming. When the ground temperature drops, your home’s water can become up to 25°F cooler. If you don’t want to lose your supply of hot water, you’ll need to know what can cause your cold water problems.

Here are four common reasons your water heater isn’t as effective in the winter.

Lower outdoor temperatures

The most obvious reason your water heater’s water isn’t as warm is because of how cold it gets outside. The lower temperatures make both the air and the ground colder, and that cold ground cools the water going to your home. As your water heater works to heat the water, it’s constantly getting refilled with colder water, making it hard to get the right temperature.

Lack of insulation

Not only do pipes need insulation so the water doesn’t freeze, but so does your water heater. Proper insulation can prevent a drop in water temperature and even raise the temperature by a few degrees. The best insulation for water heater depends on its power source. Electric water heaters work best with neoprene foam while gas models often use a fiberglass wrap secured with aluminum foil or tape.

Increased hot water usage

During the winter, you’ll likely be trying more things to stay warm. You’ll make hot chocolate, turn up the heater, and occasionally have a hot shower. However, some of these activities can take up hot water. The increased usage of hot water in the winter means you’ll find it tends to run out more often than other seasons.

More standing heat loss

Where do you keep your water heater? For many people, it’s in the basement or somewhere else that isn’t well-heated or insulated. These areas tend to get colder than the rest of your home, so your water heater will be surrounded by cold air. Because of this, more heat will escape from your water heater, forcing it to run harder to reach the temperature you set.

What makes Water Heaters Now a trusted name in the Minneapolis area?

5 Simple Water Heater Maintenance Tips

Keeping your water heater working by keeping it well-maintained is always important. However, it gets even more important during the colder winter months. We’re always around to help you with your water heater when it needs help. However, there are some things you can do yourself to keep your water heater in good condition. Proper water heater maintenance can improve its energy efficiency and allow it to work longer.

Here are five simple water heater maintenance tips to help keep yours running:

Watch the anode rod

The anode rod is a water heater accessory that helps prevent the tank from rusting. You should take a look at it every year or so to see how it’s doing. They can generally last four to five years, but you should replace yours if:

  • More than six inches of the core metal wire is exposed.
  • The rod is under half an inch thick.
  • The rod is coated in calcium.

Drain the tank

Draining or flushing the tank annually or bi-annually is key to keeping the tank free of sediment. To do this, you first have to turn off the gas/power and cold water supply to your tank. Then, get a hose and bucket, and open the hot water tap and pressure release valve. Drain the water into the bucket until it looks clear or there’s no water left. If you still have sediment, turn on the cold water supply so any sediment at the bottom is washed around and repeat the draining. You should do this last step at least once, but keep doing it until the water comes out clean. When you’re done, close the drain cock, refill the tank, and turn the power/gas back on.

Change the temperature

If you read our blog post on setting your water heater’s temperature, you’ll know that setting the temperature to 120-125°F can save you a bit of money. That blog post can give you more info on how and why to set your water heater to that temperature.

Test the pressure release valve

Boilers aren’t the only heating appliance that’s capable of exploding. Water heater tanks can also blow up if too much pressure builds up inside of them. That’s why water heaters come with a switch and pipe on the side as a safety measure. If there’s too much pressure in the tank, the switch flicks and the copper or plastic pipe directs released water safely to the floor. When you test it, put a bucket under the pipe and flick the switch on and off two or three times. If water comes out and there’s no leaking after you test it, you’re good to go.

Look for leaks

This last tip is a simple one, but it’s an important one, nonetheless. Every couple of months, you should give the water heater and its pipes a thorough visual inspection to make sure everything looks fine. Be on the lookout for leaks, corrosion, and deformities in the metal. If you see anything and aren’t sure how to handle it, give us a call.

Do you need a 50 gallon water heater replacement in Eden Prairie? Then you’ve found the right company! At Water Heaters Now, we specialize in water heater replacements and installations. It’s all we do! When Thomas’s old atmospheric vent water heater failed, he called on us to get the job done right. Check out the post below to see how our team replaced this failed unit with a more efficient, new unit.

Before The 50 Gallon Water Heater Replacement

When we arrived, there was an old atmospheric vent water heater that was ready to leak. It showed signs of corrosion on the top and bottom of the unit, which are telltale signs it’s time for a replacement.

Before a 50 gallon water heater replacement in Eden Prairie

The homeowner had decided to go with another atmospheric vent water heater to replace this unit. We agreed to install a Bradford White 50 Gallon Atmospheric Vent water heater which would be more efficient than his old unit. At Water Heaters Now, we only work with the best brands in the industry. We work with Bradford White because of their exceptional quality- plus, they’re made right here in the USA!

Listen to the Owner, Ray, Explain Why We Flush Heaters Before Removing Them

Before removing the old water heater, we need to drain it so it can be safely transported through the home. In order to provide the best drainage, we flush the unit first. This removes any built up sediment in the tank and allows it to fully drain.

During the 50 Gallon Water Heater Replacement

After we flush and drain the old unit, it’s time to remove it so we can install the replacement. It’s important to us that the home is protected from damage in every way possible. When we get ready to move the unit, we lay towels the entire way from where the water heater currently is to our truck outside. This protects the home from water damage and keeps it clean!

Towels covering a stairwell to prevent leaks

Watch Ray and Nate Clean Up The Area

After the old water heater is gone, we clear out any debris where the new unit will be placed. This allows the new water heater to sit neatly into the space and the homeowner know there’s no dirt collecting under their new water heater.

After the 50 Gallon Water Heater Replacement in Eden Prairie

Once the area is clean, we’re able to install the new Bradford White 50 gallon atmospheric vent water heater. Any time we do an install, we educate the homeowners on how to care for their new heater so it can stay efficient longer and avoid breakdowns.

This new water heater is more efficient than the old unit and will serve Thomas and his family for years to come!

Tips for Choosing a New Water Heater in Minneapolis

Choosing a new water heater for your home can be a major undertaking. There are a wide variety of factors that have to be taken into consideration. Will it be able to produce enough hot water for your family? How much will it cost? What kinds of water heater models can I use? At Water Heaters Now, we’re able to answer all of those questions and more. Take a look at some of the most important things to consider when buying a brand new water heater.

Here are some of the most important considerations when shopping around:

Tank style options

There are quite a few different options for the type of water heater you use. You can always use the tired and true tank water heater, but there are various sub-types. Some of these sub-types are based on how they dispose of combustible gasses or what they run on. Some types heat the water through different means. Tankless water heaters, for instance, heat water as it comes into your house and have a variety of pros and cons.

Costs

How much the water heater will cost you is always a major consideration. Not only do you have to think about the initial investment, but there are running costs you need to consider. You’ll want to estimate your annual costs for any model you’re considering and compare it to less and more energy-efficient models. The costs will also depend on what kind of model you get.

Size

The size of your water heater plays a big factor in how much hot water it can produce. Bigger water heaters can produce more water but can cost more and take up more space.

Energy efficiency

Knowing your potential water heater’s energy efficiency can help you maximize your energy and cost savings. You’ll want to compare models with similar energy/fuel sources to find the most efficient one.

Fuel/Energy type, availability, and cost

The fuel or energy you use to run a water heater will affect it’s costs, efficiency, and size. You’ll most likely see electricity, natural gas, and propane as some common types. However, you may also be able to use solar energy, geothermal energy, or fuel oil.

What makes Water Heaters Now my best choice for getting a new water heater?

What Size Water Heater Should I Get?

The size of the water heater you purchase is an important consideration. Bigger water heaters may be able to produce more hot water, but they can also get pretty expensive. Also, bigger water heaters may take up too much physical space depending on your home. As the area’s water heater experts, we can help you determine how big your home’s water heater should be.

What factors do I need to consider about the size of my tank water heater?

The biggest consideration for what size of water heater you need is how much hot water you use. Some loose estimates are as follows:

  • 1 to 2 people: 30-40 gallons
  • 2 to 3 people: 40-50 gallons
  • 3 to 4 people: 50-60 gallons
  • 5+ people: 60-80 gallons

Keep in mind that these numbers may not accurately describe your hot water needs. Depending on your schedules, you may still not have enough or too much. For a more accurate reading, you’ll want to check the water heater’s first-hour rating, which is the number of gallons of hot water the heater can supply per hour (assuming it has a tank full of hot water.) You can usually find it in the upper-left corner of the EnergyGuide label. The first-hour rating should be within a gallon or two of your peak hour demand.

To find your peak hour demand, first figure out what time of the day your household uses the hottest water (morning, noon, or evening.) Then, use the example worksheet found on this page to estimate your maximum usage of hot water during that one hour of the day. That’s your peak hour demand.

What about tankless water heaters?

To find the right tankless water heater for your home, you need to determine the best flow rate based on your hot water usage and the temperature rise, which is the necessary change in temperature. First, you’ll want to determine your peak hot water usage as mentioned above. Then, determine the temperature of the water going into your house by turning on a cold faucet, letting it run for a minute, and then using a thermometer on the water. Subtract the temperature you get from the desired water temperature, which is usually 120°F, and you’ll have your temperature. rise. With these two numbers, you should be able to find a tankless water heater right for you.

Tank vs. Tankless Water Heater in Minnesota

As a homeowner, you know how your hot water comes from your home’s water heater. However, are you aware that there are different kinds of water heaters? Aside from the tank variety, the most common variant is the tankless water heater. As the name suggests, it rapidly heats water as it goes into your home. However, they have different pros and cons, so which one do you choose? As the local experts on water heaters of all types, let Water Heaters Now help you decide if you need a tank or tankless water heater.

Tank water heater

Tank water heaters are the classic water heater. The tank holds 30-50 gallons of water, maintains it at a certain temperature, and delivers water to the rest of your house via a pipe in the top of the tank. On average, this is enough for three showers in a row. Unfortunately, this method of heating water results in standby loss. This means that you’ll waste money keeping water heated for usage.

Naturally, having a water tank in your house can take up a bit of space. This means it might not be the best choice for smaller homes. Luckily, they’re pretty simple, so it’s relatively easy (and cheaper) to install and repair. What isn’t as nice is that they last half as long as tankless water heaters at around 10-15 years.

Tankless water heater

Compared to tank water heaters, tankless models are smaller and more efficient. They use high powered burners to heat water as it runs through the pipes to your plumbing. This means you’ll never have to wait for hot water. Unfortunately, it can have trouble keeping up with demand if you’re using more than one appliance. It can cost more if you’re converting from a tank water heater, as preexisting piping may have to be rearranged.

If you get a tankless water heater, it’s bound to last for a while. The average tankless water heater can last 20-30 years. Also, keeping a tankless water heater for a long while can help you save money on your energy bills. It’s estimated that you can save up to 25% on energy costs.

How to Turn Off Your Water Heater Gas Supply

How do I turn off my water heater gas supply? There’s a question that’s useful for many homeowners to know the answer to. As a homeowner, you have a variety of reasons you might want to shut off the gas powering your water heater. For example, you might need to turn it off so you can replace your water heater with a new one. However, you might need to turn off the gas for a more serious reason. If you smell gas around your water heater, or around your home in general, you’ll need to turn off the gas as soon as possible.

Words of warning

CenterPoint Energy has a set of instructions for what to do if you smell gas. According to them, you should leave on foot for somewhere safer and then call 911 and CenterPoint Energy when you’re safely far away. This advice is suggested if the smell of gas is strong. However, if the smell is weak, you can do something about the problem before it gets worse.

Shutting off the gas

There are two ways to shut off the gas for your water heater. You can shut off the gas completely outside at the gas meter or for the water heater alone at the shutoff valve near the water heater. While you’re better off shutting off the gas completely, knowing how to do both is important.

For the water heater’s supply, look around the unit for a single valve handle. It’s usually located at the bottom of the unit about a foot or two out. When you find it, turn the handle 90° to shut off the gas. After that, make sure the water heater has turned off. To do this, turn up the water heater’s temperature and then check the access hatch at the bottom to see if the burner is off.

For the outside gas shutoff valve, you’ll find it right next to the outside gas meter. Like with the water heater’s valve, you can shut this off by turning the valve 90°. Generally you’ll need a wrench to turn this one on or off.

Either way, after shutting off the gas, you should call your gas company to get them to fix the leak.

5 Common Water Heater Problems

As one of many appliances in your home, your water heater is liable to have a variety of problems. As a homeowner, you’ll want to know how to deal with all these common water heater problems. In this blog post, we’ve gathered up five of these problems you’ll likely face and given you suggestions on fixing them. Knowing how to best deal with these problems can help you get the most out of your water heater investment.

Here are five common water heater problems you’ll likely encounter:

Odorous hot water

If your hot water is starting to smell, then the water tank might have become infected with bacteria. You can usually detect a sort of rotten egg smell around the water heater. To fix this, just flush the water tank and add a solution of water and hydrogen peroxide to it. Then, let the solution sit for about two hours before flushing it again with clean water. Should the problem persist, call us to help out. However, if the hot water and cold water smell, the problem probably doesn’t have to do with your water heater.

Not enough hot water

A water tank not providing enough hot water is a common issue. Generally, you can fix this by turning up your water heater’s temperature. Check out our guide on water heater temperature to see how to change it. However, be careful not to turn it up too much, or you may risk scalding yourself or others who use your water.

Noisy water heater

A water heater making noise can be the result of a couple of different problems. A likely reason is that there’s sediment in the tank that’s being burned by the heating element. In order to fix this, you simply have to flush out your water tank. Flushing your water tank is a fairly simple process that should be done once per year as part of general maintenance. Alternatively, the problem may be the result of a heating element that’s burning out. In that case, you should call on us to help replace it.

No hot water

If you’re getting no hot water whatsoever, the problem may depend on what your water heater runs on. If it’s a gas model, the pilot light might have blown out, which is caused by a faulty thermocouple or pilot control valve. Another likely cause is that the thermocouple (gas water heater) or heating element (electric) needs replacing. The replacement job is easy to do for a trained professional, but you should avoid doing it yourself if you don’t have training.

Leaky tank

If your tank is leaking, there’s no two ways about it; it’s time to get a replacement. You never want to ignore a leak in your water tank, even if it’s a small one. Having 30 to 60 gallons of water leak into your house or basement is never an enjoyable experience. When you find a leak, call us as soon as you can to arrange a water tank replacement.

Water Heater Temperature: How Hot Should It Be?

No one likes a cold shower, but no one likes a shower that’s too hot, either. However, there’s more to properly setting your water heater temperature than staying comfortable and safe. There’s debate on just how hot your water should be. A lower (yet still comfortable) temperature can help you save money among other benefits, but the default temperature is useful is killing certain bacteria. Let the experts at Water Heaters Now tell you about how your water heater’s temperature can greatly affect your home.

First, how do I adjust my water heater temperature?

Depending on your water heater’s type and model, the interface for changing the temperature will be different. Luckily, they all tend to be relatively similar. As an example, most newer electric and gas models have their thermostat behind an insulated access panel. Keep in mind that electric models have a thermostats at the top and another at the bottom of the tank. As for tankless models, they tend to have a display featuring a temperature readout and controls for it. Whatever model you have, make sure to test your water’s temperature before making any changes. To do this, turn on the water, let it run until it’s fully hot, and then hold a thermometer under the water to get a reading.

How hot should it be?

There are two main schools of thought on water heater temperature: 120°F or 140°F, which is the default temperature. According to the US Department of Energy, 120°F is the best setting for your water heater. The main reason for this is that 120°F isn’t enough to cause scalding unless you’re exposed to it for a minute. It’s especially useful in homes with young children or seniors, who are more vulnerable to scalding. Other benefits of 120°F is using less energy for heating water (good for the environment and your wallet) and minimizing the effects of hard water. Don’t set it any lower, however, or you risk facing bacterial growth.

However, OSHA suggests that 140° is preferable for bacterial safety. While most bacteria can’t survive 120°F, Legionnaire’s disease bacteria, which can cause a serious pneumonia-like sickness, is more resistant to heat. LD is more likely to show up in older water systems and water storage systems that let water stagnate outside or for long times.

Overall, we’d suggest turning your water down to 120°F for the overall benefits. However, if you know your system is prone to LD bacteria or you have a sensitive or compromised immune system, keep it at 140°. If you have the risk of LD and young or old family members, stick to 140°F, but install an anti-scald device. However, what if your water heater isn’t hot enough, no matter how you set the thermostat? Call us to arrange a replacement!

What is a Water Heater Anode Rod?

Your water heater has a wide variety of parts that help it work properly. One of these is the anode rod, and it’s a huge factor in the lifespan of your water heater. These rods consist of a steel core wire surrounded by a soft metal. The outer layer of the rod is either aluminium, magnesium, or an aluminium/zinc alloy. The sole job of the water heater anode rod is to sacrifice itself to protect the water heater from corrosion and rusting. How does it do this? Through a chemical process known as electrolysis.

Electro-what?

Some of the main reasons your water tank corrodes is because of what’s in the water. For example, gasses that naturally dissolve in water, like carbon monoxide, make the water more acidic. Likewise, the oxygen and moisture in water causes the chemical process that results in rust and corrosion. To counter against these, the anode rod is used for electrolysis. Electrolysis is a chemical process that involves passing a direct electric (DC) current through an ionic substance. In the case of your water heater’s anode rod, it’s the outer layer coating the steel core. The substance then dissolves into a solvent and releases electrons. These electrons charge the water and help prevent corrosion in the tank.

Various other factors affect how quick the anode rod corrodes. Most notably is how hot the water in the water heater gets. Generally, water heaters can be set to go up to 140°F. Many people consider 120°F to 125°F to be the safest temperature to avoid scalding. Hotter water causes the rods to corrode faster. In addition, a water softener can make corrosion happen quicker. When the anode rod finally gives out, it’s very important to replace it. Not only will it not protect against corrosion, but it can break off in the water heater. If this happens, it’ll bounce around the inside and damage the glass lining of the water heater.

How is Water Heaters Now my best choice for replacing my water heater anode rod?

Because of where the rod is located on top of the tank, it can be hard to remove and replace it. To correctly replace the rod, you’ll need the experience and tools from a professional water heater company, like Water Heaters Now. Our company chooses to specialize in water heaters so we can be the best in a single thing instead of a jack of all trades. Call Water Heaters Now if you need any sort of help with your water heater!

5 Water Heater Fire Safety Tips

Since they involve water, you might not think a water heater can cause fire. However, they certainly can. According to the National Fire Protection Association, water heaters were responsible for 11% of the fires started by home heating devices between 2007-2011. However, water heaters aren’t inherently dangerous. These statistics simply show how important it is to properly maintain your water heater. As specialists in water heaters, Water Heaters Now wants to give you some water heater fire safety tips. Following these tips can greatly reduce the risk of water heater fires.

Here are five water heater fire safety tips every homeowner should follow:

Get annual inspections

This is a simple tip that applies to all of your major home appliances. Whether it’s a furnace, your electrical system, or a water heater, it’s good to have a professional look at it occasionally. By having us check your water heater, we can curb any problems that might show up in the future. In addition, we may be able to find issues you weren’t aware of.

Keep flammables away

Plenty of people keep their water heaters in their garage or some other storage space. Oftentimes, garages act like a storage space for things like gasoline, paint, or solvents. These things are all flammable, and should be kept far away from your water heater. It’s possible for the fumes to ignite if they reach the pilot light.

Know how to turn off the water heater

Knowing how to operate your water heater is a useful skill. However, it becomes even more important when you have a potential emergency on your hands. If you smell gas or discover a gas leak, you’ll want to shut the gas off immediately.

Keep your water heater away from debris

This tip shares some reasoning with tip #2. In general, water heaters should have some room to “breathe” so the pilot light can work properly. This means keeping the area around the water heater uncluttered. Failure to do so can cause the heater to not work properly, turning it into a fire hazard.

Make sure the water heater is well-ventilated

This tip also is related to tips #2 and #4. Depending on where you store your water heater (such as the garage,) it may be in proximity to flammable fumes. While you should always mess with flammable fumes away from the water heater, sometimes you have to work on your lawn mower in the garage where the water heater is. Wherever you store the water heater, it should have good ventilation so ignitable fumes don’t linger and pose a risk of ignition.

7 Benefits of a Water Heater Tank Flush

An important part of your tank water heater is, unsurprisingly, the water tank. As you use it to heat your home’s water, minerals and other sediment can build up inside the tank. Over time, this buildup can cause a wide variety of problems for your water heater. Regular tank flushing can extend your water heater’s life expectancy and save you from an expensive repair bill. Here at Water Heaters Now, we can tell you just some of the benefits of getting a water heater tank flush.

Here are seven ways a water heater tank flush can help you:

Clean out sediment

One of the biggest benefits of a tank flush is getting rid of sediment in the tank. There are multiple ways that your water heater can generally fail. However, sediment buildup usually plays a role in each different method of failure.

Reduced noise

If your water heater is making a racket, it’s likely because scale has built up inside the tank. As scale builds up, small pockets of air get created and can make plenty of noise when heated up. As well as being distracting, the build up can also make it harder for your tank to circulate water correctly.

Improved heating

Is your water heater having trouble keeping your water hot? Whether you’re using a gas water heater or electrical, sediment can make it harder to heat your water. There are other problems that might cause water heating problems, but this might be the solution you need.

Reduced energy costs

Reduced energy costs and improved heating go hand-in-hand. If it’s taking longer to produce heat, your water heater will use more energy to to what it could easily do. This means you’ll be paying more for what you normally get.

Avoid stagnant water odors

If the water in your water tank has no where to go, the water inside will stagnate. Stagnant water leads to unpleasant odors that’ll only grow worse the longer the problem goes unaddressed.

Extend your tank’s life

There are two major ways a water heater can break down due to scale buildup. In an electric tank, scale can cause the electrodes to fail prematurely, resulting in no hot water. Meanwhile, in a gas model, scale buildup on the tank’s bottom creates an insulating layer between the water and the heat source. This can make the bottom of the tank hotter than it should, resulting in stress that can cause a leak or burst.

Warranty protection

Depending on your warranty, it may not cover you if your water heater fails due to scale buildup. Regular flushing can prevent scale failure, thus letting you rule out that cause of failure when seeking coverage for a failed tank.

If you’re looking for the best quality water heaters available, then contact Water Heaters Now! We only install the top brands on the market with the best warranties, so you can have confidence in the products we use. Last week, Water Heaters Now got a call from Richard about a leaking water heater in his basement. Our team got the call at 8AM and was on scene for an electric water heater replacement in Prior Lake by 11AM!

Before the Electric Water Heater Replacement in Prior Lake

Leaking electric water heater replacement in Prior Lake

We arrived at Richard’s home to find an aging 80 gallon electric water heater in his basement. This water heater had reached the end of its lifespan and had severe corrosion in the tank. Tank corrosion is very common in older electric water heaters and is a leading culprit for leaks and failures. Electric water heaters are especially susceptible to corrosion due to a process known as electrolysis which occurs during heating. This is when the water is hyperactive and wants to absord minerals- like the steel in your water tank!

Watch Ray Explain the Process for Removing the Old Water Heater

During the Water Heater Replacement

At Water Heaters Now, we only carry the best and most reliable brands on the market with the best warranties. We solved Richard’s water heater troubles by replacing his old electric water heater with a Westinghouse Electric Water Heater. What makes this model so special? Instead of being vulnerable to corrosion like the old steel tank he had, this Westinghouse Electric Water Heater has a stainless steel tank. That means no chance of electrolysis corroding the tank and allowing it to leak.

See Ray Explain the Process of Hooking Up the New Westinghouse Water Heater

After the Electric Water Heater Replacement in Prior Lake

After we got to the site, it was a seamless installation for our team. We removed the leaky unit and got the new stainless steel Westinghouse water heater installed in this Prior Lake home. Not only is this unit more durable than the one we removed, it has an amazing warranty from the folks over at Westinghouse. There’s a warranty on this unit for as long as Richard owns his home! Does it get much better than that?

5 Signs You Need Water Heater Repairs in Minnesota

Like any appliance in your home, your tank water heater will start to get run down over time. That doesn’t mean you have to run out and get a replacement, though. There are a variety of issues that can be fixed before they cause lasting damage to your water heater. If you can catch these issues early, you can save yourself a lot of time, money, and effort. Learn from Water Heaters Now about how to tell when you need tank water heater repairs in Minnesota.

Here are 5 signs that you need tank water heater repairs in Minnesota:

Heating problems

As you might have guessed, your tank water heater is supposed to heat your water. If it’s not doing that correctly, then you have a problem on your hands. You might have to relight a pilot light for gas models while an electrical one requires a visit to the circuit breaker. If it’s very cold outside, your pipes and tank could just need some insulation. However, if the unit isn’t working despite having power or fuel, the problem might be a worn heating element, faulty thermostat, or sediment build-up.

Too much noise

Since it’s a major appliance, it shouldn’t be too surprising to learn that tank water heaters can make some noise. However, if you hear loud popping, cracking, or rumbling, it’s time to call Water Heaters Now. Sediment build-up in the tank is making it hard for the unit to run. If not corrected with a flush and thorough cleaning, the unit might get damaged and start leaking.

Leaks

Leaks are an obvious problem, but they’re an issue homeowners might not notice unless they give their unit frequent visual inspections. If you see water around your unit, check for leaks around the fittings, connections, and temperature-pressure-release (TPR) valve. If those aren’t the problem, your tank may have developed a crack.

Rusty water

Is the water in your home looking and tasting rusty? There are two things that could be causing the problem. If your hot and cold water is rusty, the corrosion is in one of your pipes. If it’s just your hot water, chances are your water heater’s inside is getting rusted. Either way, you’ll want to immediately call a technician from Water Heaters Now to prevent any major damage. Likewise, if your water is cloudy or smells strange, a technician can help with the mineral deposits in your tank.

Mineral problems

Speaking of mineral deposits, they can do a lot more than make the water smell strange. When minerals build up around the heating elements, it can make it hard to heat water or even overheat the tank. In addition, minerals can also block the pipes that carry hot water. If the water pressure in your home seems low, that might be the reason.

What makes Water Heaters Now a local expert with water heaters?
